Just why is our fishing industry so important?

Fishing and our coastal communities were a totemic Referendum issue – punching far beyond their economic weight.  They’re about to become highly political again, rousing the great British public who care about our independence, sovereignty, democracy and freedom.

The reason why ‘the time is now’

All signs now indicate that Sir Keir Starmer is set to scuttle our already depleted fishing fleet in an EU pact as part of his ‘great re-set’. The negotiations for the renewal of the UK-EU fishing agreement were about to start, but now it seems we have the added urgency of Sir Keir wanting to wash his hands of the problem in some form of trade-off over the completely unrelated topic of defence.

This is almost certain to come up in his summit meeting of 19 May with Ursula von der Leyen and others. Fortunately, we had been planning ahead and three months ago we started the soft-launch of ‘The UK Fisheries Campaign’ (UKFC). Given the news in recent weeks we accelerated our plans and gave the UKFC its own identity with its own website (UKFish.Org).

Things have taken off rapidly with press and TV coverage and we already have four politicians as part of our Political Advisory Group. One of these is none other than the Chairman of the Commons Select Committee on EFRA, the Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael MP. As a coastal constituency MP the vitality of our fishing industry is key for him – and as a Select Committee Chairman he wields considerable influence.

So, we have the internet and social media presence, we have the media wanting us every week, and we have the political muscle. Not surprisingly we are getting people signing up but we need big numbers in order to prevent another sell-out of our fishermen and a further decline in our coastal communities.

This email is therefore my invitation to you to become a Member of the UK Fisheries Campaign today, and to spread the word to as many people as possible. Please take a look at UKFish.Org and please, please join and/or make a donation today!

With best wishes,
The UK Fisheries Campaign team

P.S. Finally, if you think you can stand it, here is the link to the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement, where the words fish, fishing, and fisheries are mentioned 191 times.

– the EU’s demands to take ever more of the UK’s fish from our waters.
